Mantissa offers three courses that are compulsory for students who are enrolled in its diploma or degree programmes.

Business Communication Skills

This course addresses the need for students to communicate successfully in the academic classroom. Through appropriate speech and communication activities, students enhance their vocabulary and recognize important associations and relationships between concepts presented for listening. These activities also help students become familiar with idiomatic expressions. The course further focuses on enabling students to communicate naturally and effectively in English. This course takes on a “learning-by-doing” approach.

College Writing Skills

This course is a comprehensive study of a paragraph as a unit of composition, emphasising organisation of ideas, specific methods of development and elements of style. The subject matter will include the grammar and syntax of sentence patterns, punctuation and the mechanics of formal college writing. Frequent writing assignments both in and out of class will be conducted.

Academic Writing and Research

This course is aimed at developing students’ writing skills for various academic purposes, ranging from assignments, position papers, reports, and research proposals. It teaches the acquisition and evaluation of evidence, integration of opinion and the appropriate process and forms for developing an academic paper. Students will display their understanding of the topics through a clear and effective final project paper which incorporates all the elements taught in class.
