Peck Gee Chua, from Malaysia, Graduated 2005
Currently interning with the United Nations
Masters student at University Minnesota 2010

I am an alumna of Mantissa College, who graduated Cum Laude in Marketing Communications (Business Administration). I did a transfer programme that was conducted with the collaboration between Mantissa College and Bemidji State University, and graduated in December 2005. Since then, I've worked in many different cities in multiple regions of the world. My experiences revolve around education, as I have worked in different capacities at the Graduate School of Education at UC Berkeley, Mantissa College and most recently, at the National University of Singapore.

At present, I am a graduate student at the University of Minnesota (currently ranked 61 in the US News Ranking). This summer, I'm interning with the United Nations in their New York headquarters with the Department of Peacekeeping. My current responsibilities at the UN include making an inventory of training courses (e-learning and those offered by the UN Officer of Human Resources Management) on priority areas of leadership, management and communications, creating a career path model, as well as assisting in the design of an online evaluation tool.

My time at Mantissa College has been a fruitful one. Without the necessary training and skills gathered from classes taken at Mantissa College, I would not have been prepared for the position that I am in right now. The classes that I took while at Mantissa College were BM 360 Consumer Behaviour, BM 552 Advertising and Promotional Management have given me the useful skills for my work positions. Without the education and guidance received at Mantissa College, I would not have been able to accelerate my career at the pace that I enjoy right now. For that, I'm grateful for the opportunity provided by the College.

Shen Yi, from China, 2009

Currently student at Griffith Univ, Queensland, Australia

I am an international student in Mantissa College and it is my pleasure to have a chance to share my study experience in Mantissa.

When I first saw the school, my first impression was it is a modern school although the school is not so big; the staffs are warm-hearted and kind. Thanks to the staff and classmates, I adapted to the environment in just a short period. At the beginning, an advisor explained to me the subjects I needed to take, including the alternative subjects and introduced the school to me so that I can have a basic understanding about the school and what I needed to learn.

I used to have the wrong idea that it was a piece of cake to get high mark in Mantissa College;  but the education system in Malaysia is different from China. Mantissa’s system is also a bit different from other colleges in Malaysia, the classes here are not big, there are about 20 students in each class and some classes, and there are only a few students like 3 to 5. Therefore, there is more interaction between students and lecturers. When the students are not clear about what the lecturer is saying, they can ask questions and be answered promptly. At the same time, the lecturers can pay more attention to each individual student. I find that studying here is a little tough and there are many things to remember. However, just by remembering is not enough; some lectures like to ask questions in class, so the students need to know the application of the knowledge in order to answer the questions. There are also group discussions and teamwork participation in some classes, so we need to work together to finish the assignments.

The exam here is not as easy as I thought. I needed to spend a lot of time reviewing the study materials for exam, but during this process, I have learned and understood many things. During the exam, the invigilators were strict, so we did not need to worry that anyone would cheat and the examiners were fair in giving the marks.

The course I took was Information Technology; there is C++, Web Development and so on. Many of the subjects need practice. Many lecturers gave us many assignments to finish in the classes and at home. Whenever I had difficulties, I could ask my lecturers for help. I learned a lot form this kind of teaching method, its practical and useful.

The life in Mantissa is colourful. Although the school of not big, but we can play ping pong in college and enjoy ourselves. The school has a student council; they often organized activities for students, like ping pong competition, basketball, badminton competition and trips to places like Pulau Langkawi and so on.

After studying here for 2 years, I have finally completed my study in Mantissa College, and now I am in Australia to further my study. Mantissa will always be an important and joyful memory in my life.

Mantissa College is a very nice university to study at, especially for those preferring an almost family-like atmosphere over a study at one of the bigger but less personal universities.

The student to faculty ratio makes it easy for professors to get to know students personally and not just as a number, and student teacher interaction was encouraged all the time. The staff is very friendly and helpful and supports students in all regards, be it study-related or simply finding an apartment.

What I liked very much about Mantissa's MBA program is that it not only focuses on fundamental concepts and theories of business administration, but also is in addition very practice-oriented. Examining numerous real-life market situations of major and minor business key-players is an essential part of the study, and I believe it to be a good preparation for any future job.

I had a wonderful and fruitful time in Mantissa College!

Kelly, Teng Run Kee, Malaysia

I was a student from Port Dickson High School. This is my 2nd Year in the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) programme from Paris Graduate School of Management (PGSM).

I believe every college has its own uniqueness. When I started my programme in Mantissa College, the friendliness of my college mates as well as the college staff has impressed me. Whenever I have problems with my study especially assignments, they will try to assist me as much as possible.

In addition to the classes, I also take part in college activities. It has become part of my life too – being a member of Mantissa Toastmaster club. Through the Toastmaster activities, I have gradually improved my Public Speaking Skill as well as Leadership Skill. I’ve also built up my self-confidence, thanks to Mantissa Toastmaster Club . Now, I can converse in English comfortably in front of the audience.

Apart from this, I have been given a chance to do internship by engaging inTele-marketing. Thanks to the Management of Mantissa College, I have even improved my communication skill after being given the training on Marketing & Problem-solving skills. This is a precious experience to me as it is a stepping stone in my future career.

Even though college life is busy and hectic with lectures and other activities, it is so meaningful to me. In fact, I am enjoying college life to the fullest. Thanks to Mantissa, now I’m ready and confident to accept more challenges in my future life.

Pham Viet Ha, Vietnam

I couldn’t even speak English when I was in secondary school. Ever since I came to Mantissa College to study for my Bachelor degree, I have improved my English by leaps and bounds. I am able to communicate with lecturers and students in English now. This is because I get more attention in a small class-sized setting so it gives me a lot of chances to learn and interact.

In reality, choosing to study in a college is not only to acquire knowledge but also to learn other skills like communication and public relationship. Internship is also available to enable us to get ready for future challenges.

NOTE: “I want people to understand in choosing about career in our life, quality is very important, not the quantity. Because there is a saying: you have to change the way you think, if you want your life to be more rewarding.”

I would love to express my appreciation especially to Ms Megan Wong from Student Affairs Deparment.

She is one of the most excellent staff in Mantissa College as she is always helpful to all students whenever we need assistance and guidance.

Most importantly, owing to communication barriers and cultural differences, she has ensured that overseas students feel at home and fit well into the system.
